MUSCAT: Oman will host the 25th Scientific Forum of the History and Archaeology Society of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in Dhofar Governorate from August 24 to 26, bringing together more than 180 members of the society, researchers and specialists from Oman and abroad.

Organised by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the three-day forum will feature 30 research papers presented during two days of scientific sessions. The papers will explore the history, archaeology, heritage and culture of the Gulf states across different historical periods.

An accompanying exhibition will showcase archaeological artefacts and finds discovered in Oman, along with scientific publications on Omani heritage, publications by the GCC History and Archaeology Society and the Omani Historical Society, a timeline of Oman, an art exhibition and a tourist information centre.

The forum holds special significance as it marks the 25th edition of the society’s scientific forums, coinciding with its silver jubilee. Dhofar was chosen for this year’s event in recognition of its rich historical and cultural heritage and its role over the centuries as a centre of cultural exchange with peoples across the region.

The research presented will draw on archaeological surveys, field studies and historical analysis, covering the cultural, civilisational, intellectual, economic and social dimensions of the Gulf region’s history.

On the final day, participants will visit several prominent archaeological, historical and tourist sites in Dhofar, giving them an opportunity to experience the governorate’s natural and cultural attractions during the Khareef season. - ONA
